Flood Watch

January 21st, 2010

…FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST THIS EVENING… THE FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR

* PORTIONS OF NORTH AND ALL OF CENTRAL GEORGIA.

* UNTIL 7 PM EST THIS EVENING

* A DEEPENING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER ARKANSAS WILL MOVE TO EASTERN KENTUCKY THROUGH FRIDAY. ABUNDANT GULF MOISTURE CONTINUES TO SPREAD NORTH IN ADVANCE OF THE STORM SYSTEM THIS MORNING. THIS WILL COMBINE WITH INCREASING INSTABILITIES AND UPPER LEVEL FORCING WHICH WILL PRODUCE PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THIS EVENING. THE RAIN WILL END LATER TONIGHT. WIDESPREAD RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES HAVE ALREADY OCCURRED IN WEST CENTRAL AND PORTIONS OF CENTRAL GEORGIA AS OF 700 AM EST THIS MORNING. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED OVER THE WATCH AREA THROUGH THIS EVENING. THE AREA OF GREATEST RAINFALL POTENTIAL IS GENERALLY SOUTH OF A LINE FROM BUCHANAN THROUGH CUMMING TO DANIELSVILLE.

* SOILS REMAIN VERY MOIST ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA DUE TO RECENT RAINFALL. THIS HAS CAUSED MOST CREEKS AND RIVERS TO FLOW ABOVE NORMAL. THE EXPECTED HEAVY RAINFALL WILL QUICKLY RUNOFF AND CAUSE RISES ON STREAMS…CREEKS AND RIVERS BY THIS EVENING. THE COULD RESULT IN MINOR FLOODING ACROSS THE AREA OF CONCERN… WHICH USUALLY IMPACTS WOODLANDS…FIELDS…RECREATION AREAS… BOAT RAMPS AND RIVER ACCESS ROADS NEAR STREAMS. ALSO…PONDING OF WATER ON ROADS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN LOW LYING OR SLOW DRAINING AREAS DUE TO DEBRIS IN DITCHES AND DRAINS. THIS MAY CAUSE SOME TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS. THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING DEVELOP.

Icy Conditions In Paulding County

January 7th, 2010

Advisory Message has been issued by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.

Thursday January 7, 2010 19:11 PM EST

Icy conditions being reported throughout Paulding. Use extreme caution – AVOID driving if possible

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office is responding and verifying reports of icy road conditions throughout Paulding County.

Drivers are urged to use extreme caution and AVOID driving if at all possible.

Below are a few winter weather driving tips:

1. If you don’t have to go out in hazardous weather conditions, then stay home! Stay home where it’s warm and you won’t take a chance of crashing on icy roads or being stranded in the cold.

2. If you do have to drive, give it your full concentration. This is no time for distracted drivers with hands full of cell phones and sandwiches. Drive cautiously with both hands on the wheel. Two-fisted drivers are ready for the unexpected when steering becomes a challenge. Buckle Your Safety Belt.

3. Slow down! Driving too fast for conditions is what gets many drivers in trouble when they hit that unseen pocket of icy road. These are days where you leave yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going. Plan to be patient or don’t plan to leave the house at all.

4. Don’t tailgate or follow too close. Avoid “grouping-up” with a pack of other vehicles, especially at higher speeds. This may help you avoid those terrible chain reaction crashes you see on the news. Buckle your safety belt.

5. Don’t use cruise control when driving on ice, snow, or slush. Cruise control is designed for normal driving conditions. But slippery roads can cause wheel-spin and loss of control when you’re locked in cruise control. And the time it takes to disengage may be time you don’t have during a spin-out.

6. Don’t panic! – Don’t slam on the brakes! If you find yourself sliding or losing control, take your foot off the gas and resist the temptation to slam on the brakes. Sudden braking will only eliminate what little traction you have. Buckle your safety belt.

7. If you start to spin you’re pretty much at the mercy of the ice. But experienced deputies with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) Unit advise you to steer in the direction of the spin until the vehicle comes to a stop. If you’re already driving slowly, this won’t be nearly as terrifying.

8. This brings us back to Safe Winter Driving Tip Number One. H.E.A.T. deputies also advise motorists who insist on driving in winter weather conditions to have at least a half tank of gas, carry a freshly charged cell phone, pack warm clothes and a blanket, and have a working flashlight in their vehicle. Because once you’re stranded during a severe weather episode, it may take emergency services a while to get to you, due to the inclement conditions and the increased number of severe incidents that occur. So Slow Down. Buckle Up & Drive Sober.

Transition To pauldingweather.com Domain

December 10th, 2009

Most of you are probably already aware that you can access this site via the URL www.pauldingweather.com, but before I had that name registered I used www.kf4ytr.com. The kf4ytr address was at one time my personal website (anyone who knows about amateur radio knows why), and when I decided to start this project I hadn’t yet decided on a permanent address. Now that I have done so, I’d like to officially announce our transition to the new address. This is for two reasons: One, so I can reclaim kf4ytr.com for personal use, and of course also because that name has nothing to do with weather.

So, for those of you who have been with us from the start, please update your bookmarks/favorite links to point to www.pauldingweather.com. In about a week or so kf4ytr.com will no longer link to this site, and will instead go to whatever purpose I find for it.

Thanks everyone, and have a Merry Christmas!
